Don’t get your jeans in a twist over Sydney Sweeney’s ad

The furor over actress Sydney Sweeney’s new jeans ad is more than meets the eye.

New reporting says she registered as a Republican in Florida before the 2024 election. That factoid came a few days after the progressive backlash over her American Eagle jeans commercial, where she states she has “great genes.” She also says they make her look and feel comfortable.

Some unhinged lefties stuck in microaggression mode from the ’90s seem to think Sweeney is touting eugenics, harkeing back to the Master Race insanity.

Sweeney, the it girl of the moment, is selling jeans! That’s it!

It’s August, and moms and dads are preparing for back-to-school and back-to-college purchases. The National Retail Federation says a K-12 student accounts for $875 and a college student $1,365 in clothes and accessories.

That tidy sum eclipsed $125 billion last year for all students from pre-school to grad school. So, who can blame American Eagle for trying to get ahead of the competition in the jeans aisle?

American Eagle (AEO) stock is up 27.95% in the last month, according to Wall Street, so they’ve jumped out ahead of the rest with this well-timed ad.

The real truth is that no one should care about what reactionary, overwrought critics have to say. Sweeney does playfully admit she’s using some reverse psychology by saying in the ad, “This is not me telling you to buy American Eagle jeans.” That after saying how wonderful they fit her.

The fact that she voted Republican, as her political registration suggests, also doesn’t mean she’s anything but an independent-minded individual sick of the same old Democratic doublespeak.

She’s an actress. She earns a living by combining her good looks with talent, and she’s out showing her face and doing advertisements because that’s what smart people do. She punches the clock.

Yet, those with a bias toward everything that helps keep the economy churning have no common-sense filter.

The irony here is that blue jeans are known as the working man and woman’s pants of choice. The tough denim fabric and heavy stitching are synonymous with value and a hard day’s night. What coal miners needed we now all want as a go-to pair of pants that will last.

American ingenuity has turned jeans into a fashion statement, but they’ll never lose their place in our closets for durability and style.

Sydney Sweeney should be celebrated for giving young women a role model they can emulate. The negativity is just the type of noise we’re still trying to eliminate from our culture.

Be yourself. Be comfortable in your jeans. Pull up those pants and get to work so the rest of us don’t have to cover for you.

See you at the American Eagle store.
